At Audiology Services of West Virginia, our philosophy is that hearing healthcare can affect an individual’s overall quality-of-life and should be monitored as part of an annual health physical. When a hearing problem is identified, our Doctors of Audiology will evaluate many aspects of our patient’s lifestyle and needs to help him or her select from a variety of hearing instruments and assistive listening devices.

Hearing aids are a common form of treatment for most types of hearing loss. However, hearing instruments are not always the answer. Our Doctors of Audiology have experience working with other management options such as cochlear implants, bone-anchored devices, and sound therapy options for tinnitus. Knowing appropriate communication strategies is a key to success when using any hearing instrument or device. Our audiologists have a background in aural rehabilitation and auditory-verbal therapy techniques, which ensures that our patients are equipped with all the tools necessary to take advantage of the best hearing experience possible.

AUDIOLOGY SERVICES

We offer a full spectrum of diagnostic testing. Based on your symptoms and experiences, our qualified audiologists will determine the evaluation plan that is right for you.
Tinnitus or ringing in the ears, is the sensation of hearing ringing, buzzing, chirping, whistling or other sounds. It can be intermittent or constant and can vary in loudness. No matter how you are affected by tinnitus, one thing is for sure – you want it to stop. The good news is there are numerous tinnitus management tools available so that you don’t have to suffer any longer.

If you have or are a candidate for cochlear implants, we have the experience to work with you to make sure your device is functioning at its highest level.

Cerumen (earwax) can build-up in your ears and cause a blockage, resulting in temporary hearing loss. We can remove it safely and pain free.
We can create custom-made earmolds based on the exact contours of your ears. We can make custom swim molds, musician plugs, and hearing protection.
Workers in certain occupations are required to receive regular hearing tests due to the risk of hearing loss that can be caused by excessive noise in their workplace. These hearing screenings can be completed in less than 30 minutes and comply with the standards set by OSHA.

TYPES OF HEARING AIDS

When it comes to hearing aids, there is no one-size fits all option. Hearing aids come in many different sizes and fitting styles (how they attach to your ear). Today’s hearing aids are considered sleek, compact, and innovative – offering solutions to a wide range of hearing aid wearers. We work with the leading hearing aid manufacturers to ensure that our patients have the best choices available.

The smallest custom style, IIC instruments, sit invisibly in or past the second bend of the ear canal. IIC devices are specifically designed for mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

One of the smallest custom styles, CIC instruments, fit deeply and entirely within the ear canal. They fit mild-to-moderate hearing losses and offer high cosmetic appeal, as they’re nearly invisible when worn.

ITC instruments sit in the lower portion of the outer ear bowl, making them comfortable and easy to use. Because they’re slightly larger than CIC models, they have a longer battery life, and can host additional features such as directional microphones for better understanding in noisy environments, and controls such as volume controls. They fit mild and moderate hearing losses.

Full shell models sit flush within the entire ear bowl. Their size allows the maximum number of additional controls and features such as directional microphones, which require space on the outer portion of the instrument. They use a larger battery size than the smaller styles and can fit a larger receiver with enough power for even some severe hearing losses. Because of their flexibility, they’re widely recommended for mild-to-severe hearing loss.

Mini BTEs are designed to hide behind the outer ear and have ultra-thin tubing/wiring to discreetly route sound into the ear. The tubing/wiring connects to a soft tip that sits in the ear canal but doesn’t occlude it. The result is a natural, open feeling as airflow and sound enter the ear naturally around the tip, while amplified sound enters through the tip. This is known as “open fitting” and is recommended for mild-to-moderate high frequency losses.

RIC models are mini BTEs that have the speaker of the instrument incorporated in the ear tip, instead of in the main body of the instrument. RIC instruments fit mild-to-severe hearing losses. This hearing aid style looks similar to the Mini BTE when worn on the ear.

BTEs with earmolds fit mild through severe hearing losses. Their longer shape follows the contour behind the outer ear and can house many features, including a program button and volume control. The earmold color and style, as well as the wearer’s hairstyle, determine exactly how they’ll look on each person.

HEARING AID SERVICES

There is no one-size fits all approach to hearing aid fittings. Your hearing loss is unique to you and so is your prescription for treatment. Depending on your hearing loss, your lifestyle, and budget – we will help you find the perfect hearing aid for you.
We program Widex, Unitron, Starkey, Phonak, Oticon, Rexton, GN ReSound, and Siemens/Sivantors hearing devices.
Some minor hearing aid repairs can be done in the office setting in a short period of time; others will need to be sent to the manufacturer for repair. We can help determine what kind of repair is necessary to get your hearing aid working at its premium level.

We offer telecoil (T-coil) activation and training for use with phone and looping technology, as well as Auracast enabled hearing aids and accessories.
We clean and perform checkups on your devices to make sure they are working properly.
